No less than 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's records.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities stated. More than 80 people were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office stated it felt "horrified" by the security action, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The slum neighborhoods near the aerial transportation hub is seen as the central command of a major organised crime groups.

State officials stated a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Many residents were injured, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Community members have compared the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed in the entire neighborhood.

Gang Growth

The Red Command group has been growing their control throughout the region, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police reported over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the raid, together with numerous weapons.

Raid Preparation

The coordinated mission by different law enforcement agencies follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are considered participants in an organization from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
