Illegal dumpers submerge countryside in massive pile of waste

Illegal dump in Oxfordshire Witness

This location has been labeled an "environmental crisis".
Journalist surveyed the scene and said the heap appeared to be "six meters tall at least".

Illegal dumpers have dumped a huge quantity of garbage in a rural area in Oxfordshire.

The "environmental crisis developing in full view" is up to 150m (490ft) extending and 6m (20ft) in height.

The enormous heap has materialized in a open area next to the River Cherwell in the vicinity of Kidlington.

Elected official brought up the situation in parliament, saying it was "threatening an ecological catastrophe".

Protection organization reported the unauthorized garbage pile was established around a recently by an illegal operation.

"This is an environmental crisis taking place in public view.

"Daily that passes increases the threat of hazardous drainage entering the aquatic network, contaminating fauna and putting at risk the health of the entire watershed.

"Environmental authorities must take action immediately, not in months or years, which is their typical response period."

Access ban had been put in place by the regulatory body.

It is challenging to identify any particular pieces of rubbish as it looks to have been pulverized with dirt mixed in.

Some of the rubbish from the peak of the heap has collapsed and is now only five feet from the stream.

The River Cherwell is a feeder stream of the River Thames, which indicates it flows through Oxford before meeting the Thames.

Government debate about waste crisis Government broadcast
The MP said the expense of disposing of the waste would be substantial

The MP petitioned the government for help to remove the illegal site before it triggered a fire or was washed away into the water network.

Informing MPs on Thursday, he declared: "Lawbreakers have discarded a huge quantity of illegal plastic waste... totaling substantial weight, in my district on a floodplain next to the River Cherwell.

"Stream volumes are increasing and thermal imaging show that the garbage is also warming, elevating the threat of combustion.

"The Environment Agency reported it has inadequate funding for enforcement, that the anticipated cost of removal is larger than the complete annual funding of the regional government."

Cabinet member said the administration had assumed responsibility for a underperforming disposal business that had created an "growing issue of illegal fly-tipping".

She advised representatives the organization had implemented a access ban to prevent more admission to the site.

In a declaration, the agency said it was examining the situation and appealed for details.

It commented: "We understand the citizens' anger about incidents like this, which is why we intervene against those culpable for illegal dumping."

A recently published investigation discovered initiatives to combat significant waste crime have been "extremely neglected" despite the issue growing more extensive and more sophisticated.

The Environment and Climate Change Committee recommended an independent "comprehensive" examination into how "widespread" environmental offenses is tackled.
