One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

Summers commented in a release that he was "grateful for the chance to have contributed, excited about the promise of the company, and anticipate tracking their advancement".

The prominent academic, who formerly led Harvard University, announced on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.

After the messages were made available with the public, the former official expressed he accepted "full responsibility for my misguided decision to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
