Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The blast took place as police and firefighters went into the house close to Verona to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

Each of the three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman got detained at the site and one more individual who fled following the explosion was located shortly later. All three have been taken to the hospital.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the property reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the property was facing an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to engage the siblings who had secured themselves into the home. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Commander Papagno told news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The official believed the detonation had occurred on a level above the doorway and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being opened”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, noting that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the performance of their duties.
