Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "betrayers" and stated they should be detained and penalized "with execution" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Content That Provoked the Dispute
The recorded message, published on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who previously served in military or intelligence capacities.
"Like us, you all swore an oath to safeguard and support this founding document," the lawmakers declared in the short video. "And right now, the threats to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from within our own country. Our statutes are clear, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline unlawful commands, you must decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow commands that violate the law or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Angry Reaction
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a furious response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On later in the week, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader published a combined declaration censuring the statements.
"Political violence has no place in this nation," they wrote. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our nation with great loyalty and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and harmful threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the security of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these radical social media posts and retract his violent discourse before he gets someone killed," the announcement continued.
Representatives' Firm Answer
The representatives who were featured in the video also issued a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and security experts who value this country and made an pledge to defend and defend the constitution of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president deems it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they continued. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they fulfill their oath to the founding principles and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "All citizens must join forces and denounce the president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Governmental Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the execution of government members."
He stated: "This is an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this immediately and absolutely."
The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government advising soldiers to disobey orders, I think that's without precedent in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to examine the language and determine all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a administration briefing on later that day, when asked by a media member, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary responded: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have sitting members of the American legislature who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to individuals of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to defy the executive's proper directives."
She said: "The sanctity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to people getting killed, it can cause confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
