Chelsea's Manager Enzo Maresca Labels Lead-Up Period as His 'Most Difficult Two Days' at the Club

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca revealed that the build-up to Saturday's triumph against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

The 44-year-old delivered a somewhat cryptic statement in his after-game media briefing despite securing a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge through goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those points lifted Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, perhaps improving the mood following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's drought without a win to consecutive fixtures.

Yet, when asked about the full-back's assist and overall display, Maresca surprisingly shared his displeasure over the preceding 48-hour period at the organization.

"How the lads want to develop has been excellent and this is the reason why I praise them - because with numerous problems, they are excelling after a tricky week," he said.

"Since I joined the club, the previous 48 hours have been the worst because a lot of people failed to back us."

Pressed on the specifics, the former Leicester City boss continued: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When asked if he meant people within at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before clarifying when queried if it was directed towards supporters or the press: "I love the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."

Injury and Suspension Woes

Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's ongoing fitness and suspension issues, noting they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, in addition to being deprived of linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.

"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.

"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are performing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so undoubtedly when you see Cole Palmer there, we said many times that he's our best player but we play almost all season minus our top player.

"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to recognize because the effort from the players is outstanding."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton consolidated their position in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup last-eight clash at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle scheduled next week.

Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Remark

It was not immediately clear who or what caused Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the worst of his time as Chelsea head coach.

In that timeframe, the Italian had returned with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at the training ground, attended a pre-game press briefing where he appeared at ease, and secured a win over an in-form Everton team.

It was unclear whether any specific media reports had irked him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something deeper from inside the club at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca only sought to rule out that it was an issue related to the club's fans, some of whom have not yet fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester in July 2024.
