Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off after a rollercoaster final round of competition.
Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off victory over Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
The champion started the last day with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but his rival pulled level again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.
Playoff Decider
This led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more person. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” said the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Contenders
Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to make up, finishing one shot short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the standings were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
